SSakata City is situated on the coastal plains of the northwest corner of Yamagata Prefecture, bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west, and by Akita Prefecture to the north. Visitors to the city can take a ferry to Tobishima Island, take in a Sakata Maiko dance performance, tour the Sankyo-soko rice storehouses or historical Homma residence, or visit the Kaikoji or Sokoji temples, or view the Tamasudare Falls. Sakata is know for its sake and is the home of seven sake breweries.
